3 Tips for Maintaining Air Quality
It seems that half of the work of owning a home is cleaning in one form or another. Washing and folding laundry, doing the dishes, sweeping the floors, the list goes on and on. Even the outdoor work involves cleaning, like raking leaves, shoveling snow, or mowing the lawn. Sometimes it seems like all of that cleaning is done for nothing.
But it really does have an impact! Keeping a clean home is extremely important for maintaining high air quality. It is especially important when those living in the home have allergies or respiratory illnesses. Even the smallest dust particles and pollutants can cause irritation. When putting together the next chore list of things to clean, be sure to add these to the list in order to maintain the home’s air quality.
Keep All Floor Types Clean

The point is, that the spot is sticky even after trying to clean up the mess. To stop shoes and socks from acting as a magnet when stepping on that spot, there has to be some deep cleaning. However, deep cleaning should be standard for any floor.
Believe it or not, the cleanliness of the floors can have a bit impact on the cleanliness of the air. It really doesn’t matter what type of flooring is used, all floors should be cleaned. Carpet can trap pollutants and allergens like dust, pet dander, and other contaminants, so it should be vacuumed regularly.
Hardwood floors may not trap dust and dirt like carpet, but they do use harsh chemicals when they are being finished. Homeowners will often have to leave their homes because the chemicals are so strong to breathe. Be sure to use natural cleaners on hardwood surfaces so the chemical smells don’t travel. Hardwood floors and vinyl are also prone to water damage, and therefore, mold. As most people would expect, mold can also affect indoor air quality. Make sure to clean up any water spills to avoid mold growth.
Open the Windows to Let in Fresh Air
Even with clean floors and air efficiently circulating the house, the air can still feel a little stale. One of the best ways to instantly improve air quality is to open the windows. Newer homes are built pretty airtight to be more energy efficient.

However, this can prevent pollutants and allergens like dust, pet dander, or household chemicals from exiting the house. There’s nowhere for them to go! Simply opening the windows can flush out these pollutants and allergens that can build up over time.
Determine the Source of the Problem

This will often stem from a larger issue with the air ducts, filters, or other parts of the HVAC system. Generally, this will offer a variety of warning signs outside of poor indoor air quality.
Whether it’s an increase in utility costs or fluctuating temperatures, in any of these cases, it’s best to call a professional to resolve the problem.
