What Are BTUs?
A BTU is a British Thermal Unit. BTUs measure how much energy is needed to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree. Although this sounds irrelevant to heating or cooling air, BTUs are the measurement used to express how much air can be converted by your HVAC each hour.
Buying a unit with too many BTUs would mean an oversized HVAC unit, and buying a unit with too few BTUs would mean an undersized unit.

As you can see, having a unit either too big or too small for your home can cause discomfort and wasted money.
